Theresa Miskimen, M.D.

Dr. Theresa Miskimen is currently the Vice President for Medical Services at University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC) New Jersey’s largest provider of behavioral health care services. She is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, UMDNJ. Dr. Miskimen is board certified in the medical specialty of Psychiatry and the subspecialty of Addiction Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She divides her time between clinical practice, teaching and clinical research. In addition, she is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and is actively involved at both the regional and national levels. She has been serving as President Elect for the New Jersey Psychiatric Association since May of 2008.

Over the years, Dr. Miskimen has incorporated the delivery of culturally competent treatment with clinical research resulting in publications addressing the influence of culture on symptom presentation. She has participated in community based projects such as "Changing Minds, Advancing Mental Health for Hispanics" sponsored by the NJ Mental Health Institute, Inc focused on enhancing access to and the quality of mental health services for Hispanics. She has spearheaded the formation of culturally competent treatment groups for Hispanic patients with severe and persistent mental illness. For her efforts, Dr. Miskimen has received various recognitions including Public Affairs Network Award from the APA and several teaching awards. She is also a co-investigator in a multi-site NIMH-funded study on ethnicity and the diagnosis of affective illness. Her research experience includes pharmacological clinical trials, both as co-investigator and principal investigator, among patients suffering from severe mental illness.

Dr. Miskimen’s academic, clinical, research and public service accomplishments have enabled her to amass broad and valuable skills, which she continues to develop and employ towards the effective delivery of psychiatric services, and the enrichment of the psychiatric profession.
