Description of Conference

Despite the fact that the US Hispanic population reached 60.5 million in 2019, representing about 18% of the total US population (US Census Bureau, 2020), only a 6.3% of investigators funded by NIH in 2020 were Hispanic. To address this underrepresentation of Hispanic/Latinx (HL) investigators, we have developed a comprehensive mentoring program that will take place during the American Society of Hispanic Psychiatry annual meeting. This meeting will host a keynote speaker, oral presentations from 12 early-career HL, lunch tables for discussion of topics related to career development, a poster session and a grant-writing workshop.  In addition, early-career HL will be paired with prominent senior researchers, and in the weeks leading up to the meeting, new investigators will have the opportunity to work closely with their assigned mentor on their presentation. During the meeting, mentors will serve as discussants and time will be allotted for questions and answers from the audience.

Call for Applications

Early-career Hispanic/Latinx investigators are invited to submit an abstract to present at the conference. Twelve applicants will be given a travel award to give an oral presentation and will receive a stipend ($1000) to assist with travel and lodging. Those applicants not selected for an oral presentation will be invited to present their work as a poster, but a stipend will not be provided.  All participants in the meeting will be able to attend all mentoring sessions, which include lunch tables, a grant writing workshop, a poster session and 1:1 meetings with their assigned mentor. 

DON QUIXOTE AWARD

This award will be presented to the best oral presentation by an early-career HL investigator.  Don Quixote has been thought as a prototype of idealism, goodwill, magnanimity and justice. For these reasons Don Quixote deserves to be celebrated; and assigning its name to a prime award conferred by the American Society of Hispanic Psychiatry is not only desirable but just, and representative of the highest aspirations and motivations of our society. Award will include a plaque and a 3-year membership to the ASHP.

Eligible to apply:

All applicants should be Hispanic/Latinx students, post-docs or recently hired faculty members (within 5 years of faculty appointment). Applicants from all mental health fields are eligible (psychiatry, psychology, social work, neuroscience, and related fields). Abstract should include original data.
